Two days ago we stated what we thought of hundreds of lurkers who refused to participate in CLICK Host’s Pick voting.

We earned the ire of some of you, and got constructive feedback from others. What we also gained is perspective, which in Alan Kay’s words, “is worth 80 IQ points.” We would like to share the insights we gained, especially with our fellow bloggers who may wonder what their readers’ profiles and interests are.

This is #2 of our Sophisticated Insults Series for NaBloWriMo.

At stores, banks, on the street, especially in small towns, people ask us, “Where are you from?”.

When we say “India”, they often respond with

“You speak very good English.”

Some of them are just curious and trying to make conversation. Others are downright condescending and may even add: “You don’t have THAT accent.”

When J lived in a small town in New York state, he had some European colleagues come over, who were not very fluent in English. Every single time they went out for lunch, the waiter would turn to one of the Europeans to talk about the order. They, in turn, would look at J to communicate with the waiter and restaurant staff.

The waiter would seem surprised. He/she was likely to say, “You speak very good English.”

J would respond:

“Thanks. So do you.”

It’s time for NaBloWriMo - National Blog Writing Month !!!

It’s Amy’s brainchild and everyone who participates gets free lip balm that she makes herself. My camera has been gathering dust in a corner and we haven’t cooked much either. J’s going to be spending much of the month at airports and hotel rooms. As usual, he will steal my lip balm and proceed to misplace it.

Amy to the rescue !!! To obtain that new stick of lip balm, I will b!tch and moan once a day for 31 days. I’m in august company.

To simplify this project, I came up with a recurring theme: Insults.

“If you can’t ignore an insult, top it; if you can’t top it, laugh it off; and if you can’t laugh it off, it’s probably deserved.” - J. Russell Lynes

Counting on Voting

September 30, 2008 | 10 Comments

My first “experience” with voting was in 1989. It was an interesting time in India. The ruling party was voted in with an incredible majority in 1984, but had bungled badly for a few years. Corruption was a major theme. The stakes were high. I wanted my vote to count.

Voting day arrived amidst feverish anticipation and furious discussions in our dorm and across campus. A few of us marched to the polling booth, only to be told – “aapka vote chup gaya saab.” (Your vote has already been cast, Sir). It took a few seconds to register. I had read about “booth capturing“, but hadn’t expected to experience it. The disappointment that we could not cast our vote, the anger that the system robbed us, the shame that we as a country let this happen, and countless other emotions are hard to describe after couple of decades.
